HBO International Latino Film Festival

This years NY International Latino Film Festival kicked off with an emotional biopic of Selena. This film filled our hearts with emotion as we remembered one of greatest if not the only Latina idol that broke frontiers with her music. This film consoled thousands of fans who still to this day are mourning her death. It marked the fifteenth anniversary for the film and was also a tribute to the late actress Lupe Ontiveros.

This years festival had many films for the indie movie lover as well as an HBO series premiere of Prófugos. We had the chance to  attend the special sneak peek of the first two episodes of the series and were surprised to see the quality of production and script that were just mind blowing. The series is an international production based on five characters that are joined in a journey as they all become Prófugos (Wanted). The series takes place in Chile and will you will see a story about drug dealing, police corruption as well as some emotional love relationships that give this series a little bit of everything. If you have enjoyed other HBO productions such as The Wire or The Sopranos, get ready for this action and drama filled tv series that will surely leave an impression. Prófugos’ official US television premiere will happen on HBO Latino, September 24th.

All good things must come to an end and the NY International Latino Film Festival selected Lemon as their grand finale, a moving story on overcoming obstacles and survival. This documentary was produced and directed by Laura Brownson and Beth Levison of Dandelion Films with Exec. producer Russell Simmons, Stan Lathan and Dan Cogan.  Lemon will be released on DVD on October 16th along with ongoing theatrical screenings. You can also catch it on PBS “Voces” on October 19th.
