Four Fitness Trends Latinos Need To Watch Out For!

Hey there my Fitness loving Latinos! Que pasa? I am Joey Olivo and am here to show you guys the world of of fitness and let you know what is going on, new classes and events that are trending as well as tips to keep you in shape and looking good! There is no style without being sexy, so here we begin!

NYC is home to many fitness trends and you can find many of the latest newest classes and events happening all around the city. Here are a few of the latest trends you should be watching out for this year.

1. Bike Sharing in NYC

The New York CitiBike share program is a huge win for fitness and better health in NYC. This gives the opportunity to utilize a shared bike to get around town instead of always taking mass transit. This type of program exists in over 500 cities throughout the world. Everywhere from Copenhagen to Mexico City you can find these types of programs. These forward thinking cities use this program as a way to enhance mobility, alleviate automotive congestion, reduce air pollution, boost health, support local businesses, and attract more young people. Years ago, NYC began the initiatives of installing more bike lanes, now this program will bring forth a huge positive step for the environment and for the health of the people in NY! Taking a bike instead of the train will give your fitness level and fat loss a huge boost. Be on the look out!

2. Obstacle Races

If you haven’t run one of these yet then you are truly missing out! They are kind of like the Hunger Games meets the decathalon. I have trained quite a few Latinos speficially for these events and have seen them get hooked! Everything from the Tough Mudder to the Spartan Race each have their own feel and obstacles. Some races will challenge every fiber of your being and some are more for the fun and party aspect. Either way you will have a good time! The fun part is training for one and building up the anticipation, get a team together and train with your friends. It is a great goal to motivate you and keep you active. Make sure you stay on top of your team and support each other. Training is tough but finishing the race is fun and rewarding. These obstacle races are sure to keep you focused throughout the year.

3. Women lifting heavier weights

Yes, believe it or not more women getting into the weight room has been more common then ever. Many of them are starting to see the true benefit of weight training and the changes it can bring to their bodies. With various training gyms like Crossfits and more Military style training camps and obstacle races women are being shown the value of weights. With more hardcore types of workouts and circuits hitting the scene do not be taken back by seeing more women competing right along side the guys! No more pink dumbbells! Say hello to a new trend of women really looking to change their bodies by using weight training to burn fat and shape their bodies.

4. High Intensity Interval Training

Be on the lookout for a more intense type of class that will put any old bootcamp to shame. Times are changing and people are talking. High Intensity Interval Training AKA “HIIT” used to be known exclusively by professional athletes. HIIT is a series of short super intense cardio-strength intervals with short recovery periods in between.   Over the last few years classes that have HIIT components like Tababta, MetCon, and Crossfit have been packed up because people are seeing major results without having to be in the gym for hours at a time. These classes are definitely worth checking out and you will find them coming soon to a gym near you!

Las Curvas De La Vida – Tips For Weight Loss

Many celebrities are all over the pages of the tabloids for the changes they have undergone. A lot of the time we see them go from Hot to Not, where they just seem to lose all their umph and let their bodies go. Just take a look at the criticism Christina Aguilera gets for developing her curves from where she was before.

For us real world people, we all go through the similar changes with our own bodies, and we all can relate to gaining some pounds. Often times we get lost trying to figure out what to do. There is so much advice and information out there, and it seems like we live in a world where every celebrity has their own diet or workout video.  It is no wonder why the average person is stuck feeling confused about where to begin!

I have to give a shout out to one hot model in particular who did what not many celebrities would ever dare to do. Vida Guerra, Cuban born glamour model went the extra mile. She took her body to the next level by changing her diet and training hard. She is now a pro IFBB Bikini competitor. She shows how a woman can change and look fantastic as long as they put the work in. It is amazing what the right balance of weight training and nutrition can do to change your figure.

Her change was dramatic and very inspirational. She traded her “softer” look to one that is tight and toned with streamlined curves.  Figure modeling is a rough ride for anyone. Not that you have to become a professional figure model to see changes, but you do have to have the same mindset as one in order to change your body for the better. This is not an overnight process. It can take 3-6 months to see significant changes, stay the course and the changes will come. Get your mind in a place where you are ready to get your body right each and every day.

Many people tend to not work as hard as they should on their fitness and training and they get lost in all the advice out there. I know that some recommendations range from “All you need is 20 minutes a day 3 times a week!” to “You must do an hour a day 7 days a week!” Let us not get lost in this.  Here are some suggestions from yours truly to help you get that super model body. I have trained many fitness competitors in the past and have had plenty of success with my clients following this advice.

These tips will have you seeing a before and after like Vida Guerra’s in no time!

Tip 1: Put more time in! – Weight Train 3 – 4 days a week

I know it sounds like a lot but for maximum results you need maximum time. Two days does not cut it, twice a week will usually leave you maintaining the way you look. If your goal is to get fit and look right, put more time in. If you do not have much experience weight training it is worth it to hire a certified trainer to help teach you the way.

Tip 2: Cardio – 3 – 4 days a week

This can be separate sessions done throughout the week. The sessions do not have to be long. I have seen great success with 30 minute cardio sessions done at a moderate pace, where you are challenging yourself and working your butt off.  My favorite is simply hopping on a stationary bike, setting it to a moderate level and cranking out 5 miles as fast as possible. This will kick your butt and burn a ton of calories with it!

Tip 3: K.I.S.S. Diet –

Keep It Simple Silly! Don’t beat yourself up in the head about what diets to choose, and what foods are good and bad and calorie counting. Only you know what you like to eat and what foods work for you. For beginners, the best advice is to start a food journal. Write in it EVERYDAY. Then look back and see where you over did it, what junk food you could have cut out,  or where you could have cut down some portions. Most of the time people need to add vegetables to their dinner and a salad to their lunch. Cut out processed foods, like bagels and bread and sugary treats. Plain and simple, this is a great start for anyone!

This is just the beginning of the path. So where are you going to take your fitness goals this year? Good luck and it is time to get HOT!

Stay strong,

– Joey
