Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC)

NYC, July 7 – 11, 2015

Affinia Hotel in New York City was the hub for Latin Alternative artists from all over the US and Latin America during another incredible Latin Alternative Music Conference, aka LAMC. This year was the 16th annual LAMC and we partied like so. We enjoyed the showcases, the interesting panels, the live shows in the park, and all the goodies in our LAMC bags!

Musicians from all over came to showcase their talents for New York music lovers. Vicentico was definitely the big star at the conference. Everyone anticipated getting that coveted photo of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs’ frontman. Our photographer Lou Aguilar, who is also a big fan, was there to bring you these awesome shots of his performance at SummerStage as well as some candid shots of people at the conference.

Panels included a very special presentation by Charly Alberti (Soda Stereo) talking about his foundation R21. There was also a conversation panel with Vicentico discussing the 20th year anniversary of Rey Azucar. This panel was led by Raul Campos from KCRW with guests Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth (Tom Tom Club, Talking Heads).

Each year there seems to be more buzz surrounding the LAMC than in previous years, which is an excellent thing because we get to see the conference through many different perspectives. There is so much going on at LAMC that it’s impossible for one person or outlet to catch it all.

My new favorite groups were Torreblanca, Centavrus, and Buscabulla which I got to enjoy at Highline Ballroom for the indie music showcase. Buscabulla was awarded the Artist Discovery Award by LAMC as well as most photogenic performance, awarded by me… See the pictures below! We also got to hang out with really cool and talented DJs, Basico3 from Guatemala and DJ Juan Data from Cali. Check out their mixes on Soundcloud!

The most exciting show of the conference for me was Los Auténticos Decadentes at Celebrate Brooklyn with Astro and Kinky. All bands we’ve seen perform at previous conferences, but we didn’t mind, we didn’t mind at all. If getting wet with Los Auténticos Decadentes (you had to be there to know what I mean!) could be on my list of things to do every summer, it would be! Porque yo, no quiero trabajar, no quiero ir a estudiar, no…

Since 2010 we have taken part in the conference to bring you an inside look at what the conference is all about. Each year we become more excited about this movement and the musicians who represent this new flavor of Latin Music, an ever expanding genre that can be enjoyed by all, not just Latinos.

LAMC is now 16 years alive with music and here we bring you some of our favorite memories of this year’s conference. Enjoy!

diversity within the contemporary Latin music community.”

places like Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Argentina and even the Bronx.”

LAMC Recap 2013

LAMC has always been a great stage for underground artists as well as established musicians that embody the expansive latin alternative music genre. Throughout the years, the Latin Alternative Music Conference continues to grow and carve paths of success for musicians. This year was the conference’s 14th year in New York City. It was a week full of free concerts, discussion panels, acoustic showcases, outdoor films, food, art, and official and unofficial after parties. The LAMC panels targeted aspiring musicians, one was a very special Q&A with Salsa legend Rubén Blades.

The members of Elastic Bond described Rubén Blades’ discussion panel as “2 years of college in an hour and a half”, when we spoke to them. Other panels presented by BandZoogle and MiTú Network talked about online tools for the new generation and the “new music economy”. Many Artists whom we interviewed at The New Yorker Hotel credited LAMC and National Records with their success in the United States, and many affirmed that if it weren’t for LAMC people wouldn’t know about them.

La música alternativa para mi es la raíz del argumento musical total, porque esa música me parece a mi la más comprometida y la menos intoxicada y la menos influida por métodos comerciales que desvirtúan esa conexión de arte y producción. – Rubén Blades

We had a great time interviewing musicians about the conference, their musical beginnings and cultural idiosyncrasies. We met many promising new bands like Astro, Dapuntobeat, Viniloversus, and Bareto. Highlights of the conference included performances by Julieta VenegasFat Joe, La Vela Puerca, Carla Morrison, Cuarto Poder, Natalia ClavierLos Rakas, and Lila Downs. Nortec Collective’s Bostich + Fussible played for a soaked crowd at Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park, a venue that doesn’t let a little rain slow it down! On the other hand, Saturday’s Central Park SummerStage show was nearly cancelled due to rain, but luckily for fans, Julieta Venegas, Carla Morrison, and Alex Anwander performed despite the “Tormenta” that didn’t happened.

All in all, this year’s LAMC  hosted some terrific events for musicians, music lovers, and entrepreneurs. We expect to see more exciting performances with every new LAMC to come as well as a peek into who will be the next big thing in Latin alternative music.

“At its core, the Latin Alternative Music Conference is a gathering of dedicated underdogs, rallying behind music that envisions a polyglot, multicultural, border-hopping 21st-century culture but faces stubborn barriers, in the United States, of language and radio formats.”New York Times

New Video: Kinky – Despues Del After

KCRW has debuted the new video for Kinky‘s newest song “Despues Del After” and it will have you dancing like a robot. The video was shot in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong and features members of the band being lead to an after party where everyone is partying and singing Karaoke. Karaoke with Asians is on my bucket list of thing to do, I’ve heard it’s probably one of the best Karaoke experiences you’ll have!

We saw Kinky perform at SummerStage as part of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC). For some it was their first Kinky experience and others were Kinky veterans, it was apparent as they sang the words from their latest work ‘Sueño de la Maquina’. Raul Campos of KCRW interviewed the band backstage (KCRW Interview – Soundcloud) and they talked about how 13 years ago the band had received LAMC’s ‘Artist Discovery’ award. The Grammy-nominated band is originally from Monterrey, Mexico and it was not their first time performing at SummerStage, a place frontman Gil Cerezo says has been special to his musical career.

LAMC Recap 2012

New York City 2012 – Latin Alternative Music Conference

We enjoyed showcases, concerts at SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn, discussion panels,  but our personal favorite moment was getting to interview the bands and artists performing at LAMC. Music is a very important part of Latin American culture. It’s one of our exceptional traits that has many Latinos striving in the entertainment industry today. LAMC has been a godsend in taking this community and placing it on a platform that continues to elevate closer to the stars.

From Chile to Dominican Republic, indie as well as major artists all came together in NYC to network, promote and celebrate their work, while catching up with the rest of industry’s goings-on. The common topic of the conference was, “Cuanto ha crecido el movimiento de el LAMC”. We got perspective from Ritmo Machine, Los Auténticos Decadentes, and La Vida Boheme to some exciting conference new comers  like Adrianigual and 3Ball MTY. The real icing on el bizcocho was a special appearance from Calle 13 and Tego Calderon, who showed strong support.

Interview after interview artist agree LAMC has turned from an underground networking source to a revolution in bringing Latin America’s finest music present in the US. LAMC 2012 is now their 13th year, and with this lucky 13 we only anticipate more years of growth and success for them. It is truly inspiring no matter what part of the entertainment industry you’re in.
