The story behind Latin music’s path to mainstream popularity in the U.S. has been packaged into an upcoming documentary.
Debuting on HBO and HBO Latino on Nov. 16, “Latin Explosion” chronicles the narrative of the U.S. Hispanic demographic and its influence on pop culture through its music, from the Cuban sounds that found their way into big city nightclubs in the 1930s, to the meteoric rise of Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin in the late 1990s.
“I try to tell the story through music to keep people’s eyes and ears and senses alive while we were giving them all the important headlines about immigration, about politics, about all the things that are in this movie,” says Tommy Mottola, the former Sony Music chairman who produced the documentary.
The tagline — a legal trademark belonging to the Recording Academy, by the way — is hardly hyperbole.
Because when the music starts on Nov. 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, most of the biggest stars in the Latin pop universe will be under the same roof.
The ceremony, which begins at 9 p.m., will be broadcast on Univision, and the network’s coverage will include a special pre-show, “Noche de Estrellas,” starting one hour prior.
Catalina Garcia of Colombian band Monsieur Perine, nominated for Best New Artist.
Leading the pack of nominees this year are a pair of Mexican artists. Leonel Garcia, a former member of Sin Bandera, gathered six nominations for his romantic album “Amor Futuro,” including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade, meanwhile, got five nods for her delicate confessional effort, “Hasta la Raíz,” including Album of the Year and one nomination shared with Garcia for the album’s title track.
The Nov. 7 event will be streamed live on Yahoo Live. iHeartMedia Spanish-language stations will also broadcast the event and Telemundo will have a special re-broadcast on Nov. 15.
El Megaton Mundial de Polito Vega concluded with many highs and many lows. La Mega 97.9 may claim it was a total success on their site but for such a highly promoted event with some of the biggest headlining acts you would think people would leave happy, that was not the case on this night.
First and foremost Pitbull who was number 1 on the roster (or 2 after J. Lo?) did not show up and Jennifer Lopez was gone in the blink of an eye, according to fans who specifically went to see her. On El Jukeo, El Pacha reported that Pitbull decided not fly out of Miami despite the station’s efforts to get him to New York on time. They said Pitbull did not answer their phone calls and they also denied that artists were not paid for their performance. We don’t know if Pitbull has released a statement to fight these claims, but we’re interested in hearing what he has to say! Maybe he was still recovering from partying with Taylor Swift?
For me the biggest disappointment of the night was not that Pitbull was a no show, it was the fact that I had seat tickets but instead decided to stick around in the press room to get a close up and maybe a shout out from J. Lo. After all I was told everyone performing including her would make their way there. J. Lo, Wisin, and Tego Calderon were no where to be seen in the press room.
When I finally realized I was missing the whole show I made my way to the front of stage to catch what was left of the “historic” event. I went out to find Polito Vega sitting in his golden throne to receive a certificate of recognition from Cesar Perales, current Secretary of State. La Caballota Ivy Queen came out looking like something from another planet, and I say that in the best way possible. She looked like a creature from outer space with her silver sequined pants and scaly blue top. Her outfit all the way from her hair to her nails was just over the top, we loved it!

It’s that time of year again where the biggest Latino artists get together to celebrate the biggest party of the year. The king of Latin radio Polito Vega knows how to throw a party and he has been the voice of New York radio for decades. This time he is getting together with the biggest of the biggest including none other than Mr. Worldwide Pitbull and the queen Jennifer Lopez.
Alongside these artists you will also get to see a reunion of Los Hermanos Rosario, Toño Rosario, Grupo Mania and Elvis Crespo. Salsa will be catered by the talented Victor Manuelle, La India and Domingo Quiñones. Three new artists to look out for are Puerto Rican Bachata Singer Jay Ruiz, along with Mozart la Para and Messiah.
These are just a few of the artists who will perform at the World’s Greatest Arena Madison Square Garden on Wednesday October 28, 2015.
TICKETS are going from as low as $21.00 – $300.00
Here is the official video for Prince Royce and Jennifer Lopez’s song “Back it up” with Mr Worldwide Pitbull. This is a fun & flirty video with “Papi chulo” sound bits that sound super sexy sung by Jennifer. Although J. Lo is no longer Jenny from the block she proves once more that she is still a Mami Chula.
Prince Royce’s new single “Back it up” will appear on the Latin star’s forthcoming debut English-language album that is expected to hit stores later this year via RCA Records.
