Photos: 6th Annual Tropical Fest ft. Tito Nieves

The 6th annual Tropical Fest this past Sunday afternoon, August 18th was the latest in the Central Park Summer Stage series. The top bill for this event was Tito Nieves along with a mix of young stars on the rise, some re-invented, young veterans and, along with Tito, a legend in his genre. Nieves is celebrating his 30th year in the business and, along with 30 albums recorded, has long-established himself as one of the iconic figures in Latino music, and even beyond.

The show was led off by Max and Lenny Santos, two former members of the immensely popular Bachata band, Aventura. But since lead singer Romeo left, Max and Lenny  have tried to keep a grasp on their positions in the business with limited success. However they have returned with a new band they have formed called Vena. Along with former Xtreme member, Steve Styles, this new group looks to have something unique to offer. With both Santos flanking Styles on Guitar and a slew of background complements, Vena started the show off right pulling screams from the younger members of the audience as well as fans of their past music. The singing of “Shorty Shorty” is an example that they will play the vintage but mix it with their own elaborate technical undercurrents.

Keeping with the youth movement, 19-year-old K-Rose followed as he once again sang a lot of his hybrid hits that kept the vibe going. This young crooner melted the ladies while a curious site saw two young boys, who couldn’t be more than 8, distributing free CD singles. Andy Andy was the bridge between the past and the future. The Bachata artist looked a little older but he still had that Aura of past glory and in turn simply showed why he was an elite artist only a few years ago. No woman in the temporary stands or in the mass of humanity in front of the stage was complaining.

The pre-main event followed with Jose Alberto, “El Canario” putting on a display of footwork and song that was so old school, it looked like the 54-year-old was in a time warp and transplanted from his prime straight to Central Park this afternoon. Dressed casually Jose, dominated the stage with effortless dance steps and a command that many of the younger artists should take notes on. The highlight had to be when Jose pretended to be playing an instrument with his hands while whistling the notes. The legend of his name confirmed for all to see, El Canario’s performance was so electric and lengthy that it almost superseded the finale.

And a fine finale it was with Tito Nieves, looking thinner and majestic in the cool night air spoke of the late 80’s reminiscing. His deep operatic voice gave depth to the old hits and he even gave his background singer a moment in the sun to sing a song that was not rehearsed but held his own and then some while Tito took the guiro and played backup for a song. He playfully joked if there were any English only fans that it must have been a culture shock surrounded by so many Latinos. But soon thereafter he did his English hit “I like it like that” to close the proceedings. A night to remember for sure on a night where the rains stayed put and watched the show.

“Madre Tierra” by Draco Rosa Ft. Calle 13

“Madre Tierra” starts off with the stylings of a hardcore rap metal song, à la Rage Against, and then turns into strong praise and appreciation for mother earth. Draco Rosa enlists the help of friend René Pérez of Calle 13 on this track from his new album Vida. They both sing truths about who we are on this earth and how mother earth gives us so much without asking for nothing in return. Draco asks the question who are you and what would you be without mother earth? A strong statement that offers reflection on the idea that we are just matter, or atoms, and very much a part of the earth itself. We’re really enjoying this song and Rene’s lyrics…

Madre tierra felicidad y miseria
todos somos tiempo, espacio y materia!

In 2011 Draco battled with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma near his liver and underwent treatment for almost two years. His new album Vida celebrates his recovery and life ahead. Vida officially became available in stores on March 19 but is already #1 on iTunes lists. The album also features collaborations with Marc Anthony, Ruben Blades, Enrique Bunbury, Andres Calamaro, Tego Calderón, Calle 13, José Feliciano, Juan Luis Guerra, Juanes, Maná, Ricky Martin, Mima, Ednita Nazario, Romeo Santos, Alejandro Sanz And Shakira.

Enrique Iglesias - Finally Found You

New Video: Enrique Iglesias Featuring Daddy Yankee

Enrique Iglesias - Finally Found You

As if you had not heard Enrique Iglesias “Finally Found You” now there is a new version that is geared to the more Latino audience featuring Daddy Yankee. The video shows Enrique as his natural sexy self with a very caliente bed scene and a naked shot that we hope is not a double and we also wish it wasn’t as blurry… Just saying. Daddy Yankee’s feature is a Spanglish mix and gives the song an of urban twist.

Thanks everyone for supporting the single and I hope you like this new version of the song!
