Chico Sonido Releases Sad Girl Mixtape

It looks like living in LA has finally gotten the best of Chico Sonido. The DJ/Producer (nee Raul Espinosa) from Mexico recently released a new mixtape of summertime oldies like the ones legendary disc jockey Art Laboe would play on his radio show.

The mixtape includes 18 beats that have been recontextualized/chopped up with samples of classic R&B, Soul, and Oldies commonly found on lowrider music compilations. It’s “barrio music for gangsters of love,” he explains, “firme soul music for sad cholas and vatos locos.”

It’s a bit of a departure from his days working alongside Toy Selectah and starting a tribal musical revolution but just as great.

Nacional Records and Universal Music Industry Showcase

This week three artists who are wonderful examples of the ever-changing and growing face of Latin music, gave the crowd at The Virgil in Los Angeles a taste of Latin music and diversity. The showcase by Nacional Records and Universal Music Latin Entertainment presented 3 new latin artists signed to their labels. Everyone enjoyed live performances by La Santa Cecilia, Alex Anwandter and Raul Y Mexia. We also got to see some of the members of popular Argentinean band Los Autenticos Decadentes as well as hip hop artist Malverde.

Named by TIME Magazine as an artist “poised for US Stardom” ALEX ANWANDTER -singer, songwriter and a leader of Chile’s new vibrant pop scene- released, “Rebeldes” on Nacional Records. A critically-acclaimed and beloved album that has since had him touring Mexico, the US and South America as well as being featured everywhere from to Vice, MTV Iggy and Billboard. 80’s-influenced synth pop, chilean house and emotional songwriting are all conjured up in Anwandter’s electrifyingly danceable, engaging live performances.

Named after the Mexican patron saint of musicians, local favorite LA SANTA CECILIA is currently celebrating their signing to Universal (UMLE) and preparing for the upcoming release of their new album. La Santa Cecilia combines traditional Latin rhythms like cumbia and bolero with rock and jazz all blended together by Marisoul’s powerful vocals. The band’s fun and often whimsical songs and performances got the attention of multi-Grammy winning producer Sebastian Krys, who signed them to his label and produced their Grammy-nominated track “La Negra”.

Recent Nacional Records signings, RAUL Y MEXIA made their LA debut! The brothers, the sons of Hernan Hernandez of Los Tigres del Norte, are continuing their family’s musical legacy, but forget their own unique sound with diverse influences from hip-hop and cumbia, Latin ballads and electronic dance music. Their album, ‘Arriba Y Lejos’, was co-produced by Grammy-nominated producer Toy Selectah – who recently hit #1 on the Billboard charts in the US and Mexico with 3BallMTY’s “Intentalo” – and Luigi Giraldo (Kumbia Kings / Cristian Castro).
